Red wine on a sofa: what to do first
Treat a fresh red-wine spill cautiously. The upholstery material determines whether water or any cleaning product is appropriate.
Absorb liquid without rubbing
Gently absorb free liquid with a clean, absorbent white cloth. Avoid strong pressure and do not rub the stain into the fabric. Check the care label before doing more. Unknown, delicate or water-sensitive upholstery needs professional assessment.
Household remedies are not universal
Salt, vinegar, harsh cleaners and soaking can leave residue, rings or damage. Do not combine different products. A removable cover is not necessarily machine washable. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.
Prepare useful information
Note when the spill happened, the fabric type and any products already used. Photograph the stain and care label. We assess an appropriate treatment; complete removal cannot be guaranteed without an assessment, and older or previously treated stains may remain.
