Safely document water damage.
Enter an affected area only after the responsible specialists have confirmed it is safe. Use this checklist to organise photographs, contacts, approvals and the proposed cleaning work.
1. Safety
Clarify risks before cleaning up.
Water damage can involve electrical hazards, building materials, sewage or indoor air. Follow the instructions of the emergency services, property manager, insurer and responsible specialists.
- Have the responsible specialists stop the source of the water
- Have electrical and building safety checked
- Remove standing water properly
- Avoid entering affected areas unnecessarily
- Record approval for further work
2. Visible damage
Take photographs and notes before anything is moved.
Where it is safe to do so, photograph affected rooms and visible damage. Take an overview and close-ups that show where each damaged area is located.
Write down the date, approximate time, affected rooms, visible materials and immediate measures already taken.
3. Responsibilities
Record who authorised each step.
This checklist does not replace a claim or damage report. Agree the next steps with your property manager, landlord or insurer.
Release
Record which rooms are safe to enter and which tasks have been approved.
Evidence
Ask which photos, receipts or quotes are needed. The insurer decides which costs are covered.
4. Cleaning
Agree technical work and cleaning separately.
Leak detection, repairs, electrical clearance, mould treatment and expert reports require the appropriate specialists. Pumping and technical drying are assessed and commissioned separately from cleaning.

After release
